The Department is one of the most important and very technical departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MoAI) and it is responsible for promoting sustainable Crop Production through adaptation of innovative technologies while maintaining a steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability. Somalia’s agriculture sector is central to its economy and food security, employing a large portion of the population and providing staple crops essential for both local consumption and trade. Despite challenges such as climate change, pests, and limited infrastructure, the department works to enhance agricultural resilience and productivity.
The Crop Production Department in the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is responsible for enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security through the development and promotion of sustainable crop production practices. Its mandate includes improving seed varieties, implementing modern farming techniques, managing pests and diseases, and optimizing irrigation systems. The department supports farmers with technical assistance, research-based solutions, and access to resources, fostering increased yields and resilience to climate change while contributing to the nation’s economic growth and food sustainability.
Identification, development and application of modern technologies leading to improved production of safe and nutritious foods.
Collaborate with national and international stakeholders through planning to address bottlenecks issues in crop production, such as climate change, market access, and food safety.
Promote sustainable crop production through development of educational materials, demonstration plots and farm field schools approaches.
Support the development of drought and disease resistant varieties.
Provide technical assistance, advisory services and improved farm inputs to the producers.
Carryout outreach activities to raise public awareness on the importance of sustainable crop production and its role in promoting economic development and environmental sustainability.
Organizing and conducting training programs and workshops for farmers and extension workers on various crop production techniques, including the use of new technologies and innovative approaches.
Enhance harvest and post-harvest management by improving improved storage and processing facilities.
To improve income and employment among farmers by promoting horticultural crops gain more income.
